Introduction

For over 20 years, starting in 1986, the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery has conducted surveys of the institutions to which its members belong, to determine the annual numbers of procedures in the areas of cardiovascular (including thoracic aorta surgery), general thoracic, and esophageal surgery. In recent years, we have achieved a high response rate of 90-95% in all three areas, covering virtually all operations performed in Japan in the area of thoracic surgery. Details of the results of the 2007 scientific survey are available in published form at Gen Thorac Cardiovasc Surg (2009) 57:488-513 Open link in new window. Here, we provide the results of surgery for major disorders in the three fields of cardiovascular (including thoracic aorta surgery), general thoracic, and esophageal surgery (changed in some places from Gen Thorac Cardiovasc Surg (2009) 57:488-513 Open link in new window). Annual changes in the numbers of operations in each area and changes for each disease are shown as graphs. Statistics for each type of operation in these three areas are given as tables, and 30-day mortality and hospital mortality (including all deaths during postoperative hospitalization) are given separately.
